How to Use Aciclovir

Aciclovir will reduce the severity of the infection but it will not cure it.

How Long Does It Take to Get Tablets

The length of treatment depends on the type and severity of the infection. Treatment for mild infections can be given for as long as is ordered. Treatment can be repeated as prescribed. Treatment should not be continued for more than 12 days unless directed by your doctor.

• Take one tablet with a glass of water at least 30 minutes before any food or beverage (such as a meal). It may take longer to work if you take it with food.
• The full course of treatment may need to be completed by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not use Aciclovir more than once a day.
• If you are taking aciclovir for the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) or the herpes labialis (HSV2), talk to your doctor about the proper way to treat the infection.
• If you are taking aciclovir for the herpes zoster virus type 2 (HSV2), talk to your doctor about the proper way to treat the infection.
• Take Aciclovir exactly as prescribed. You may need to take it for a maximum of 12 days if you are no longer contagious.
• If you have problems with passing urine, talk to your doctor about the proper way to treat the infection.
• If you are contagious and feel uncomfortable with urination, you may want to consider a different route of administration.

For most infections, you will be given a 400mg tablet for the first day (the first infection) followed by 800mg tablets for the second day (the second infection). This will allow you to have the first infection no later than 48 hours after your last dose. For genital herpes, you will be given a 400mg tablet for the first day (the first infection) followed by 800mg tablets for the second day (the second infection).
